Feeling squeamish at the reptile show

This weekend, we met one of Oliver's friends at the playground for a playdate. While we were there, his friend's mom invited us to join them at a reptile and amphibian show that afternoon. I would have preferred not to be in a room full of squirmy, jumpy, slimy things, but once Oliver found out, of course we had to go! :-)

Right when we walked in, there were two long tables with rows and rows of small deli containers. Inside the deli containers were little snakes. They were all so beautiful and incredibly brightly colored. I loved looking at all of the different patterns and colors.

Little, expensive snakes. Very pretty, but . . . eww.

Baby turtles! They were SO cute.

There were a lot of booths where the kids could hold some of the animals. Here's a picture of Anna holding some kind of lizard (wearing a harness. :-))

Here's my pretty girl, very excitedly wearing a snake. :-)

Oliver's turn! :-)

These next three pictures are so funny. Oliver wanted to wear a different snake, and right after it was draped on his neck, the snake started to wrap itself around his mouth and neck, and Oliver started freaking out. (He wasn't in any danger of course.) It was so funny!

Some of the animals were not slimy, jumpy, or slithery, like this adorable baby hedgehog that Anna is holding.

But most of the animals gave me the heebie jeebies, like this display with baby pythons hatching from eggs. GROSSSSSS. YUCK.

And, of course they had to have snake food available for sale, like these tiny, newborn rats. I was torn between feeling bad for them, and feeling grossed out because . . . well, they're RATS.

Surprisingly, Buttercup liked holding the baby rats the best!

I would like to say that this was a fun outing, but I mostly felt sick to my stomach the whole time. The kids really enjoyed it though! :-)

It seemed like a good idea at the time . . .

Ever have one of those moments where you think you're doing something really smart, and it turns out to be the total opposite? I have those moments every day. And now that we have a newborn baby, I have those moments at night, too!

Last night I was up feeding Theodore around 11:30pm. He needed a diaper change midway through his feeding, so I got a new diaper ready and cleaned him up, like always.

Then, as I was reaching for the clean diaper, I realized that he was about to poop again.

And for some reason, I thought to myself -- and this is the not-so-smart part -- Hmm, I shouldn't waste a clean diaper.

So I caught the poop. In my hand.

And in the process of cleaning up, I got poop on the changing pad cover, Theodore's clothes, the dresser, the wipe container, and on my shirt.

Sigh.

But at least I didn't waste a clean diaper.

Ick.

Maybe I should clean out the fridge more often.

Does this look like a fossil to you?

Over the weekend, Oliver and Dennis went fossil hunting at one of the parks on the trail. They were gone for a couple of hours, and came home with a bag of fossils that Oliver collected:

However, they also came home with this thing, which is definitely NOT a fossil. And should not have been anywhere NEAR my babies and my house.

Oliver was absolutely thrilled with it and wanted to keep it in his room. NO WAY, I said. And just look at the grin on Dennis' face -- he was egging Oliver on and totally wanted to keep it. NO.WAY., I said again.

Even Buttercup joined in. "Itsy-bitsy spider? Itsy-bitsy spider, please?" Um, no baby, there's nothing itsy-bitsy about that spider, and it's going back in the woods ASAP.

Somehow, I feel like this is going to be one of the least gross things that my husband and son bring home from their adventures . . . but at least they have fun! :-)
