How high's the water, mama?

Thanks to Tropical Storm Hermine, we've had quite a bit of rain over the past 36 hours. A lot of rain. And with all of that rain, the local creeks and rivers flooded in a big way. Long-time residents of our town and neighboring towns said that they've never seen the waters rise so much and so quickly.

Even in our neighborhood, the usually gently-flowing creek rose so much that I could see and hear the water's rapids from our driveway when I went to check the mail this morning. Naturally, we all ventured across the street to see it as close as we dared.




This picture doesn't do it justice, but you can see that the water is obviously much higher than usual. The waters had actually receded some at this point -- our neighbor had seen the water about 5 feet from her back door at 6:00 this morning.


This is the fence bordering our neighbors' property -- the water was so strong that it knocked out part of her fence!



This is a shed from another neighbor's yard, a couple of houses down. The water washed it downstream until it crashed against this tree.


While we were standing there, watching the water, we saw what looked like entire trees floating downstream in the rushing water.



Later this afternoon, we drove to the trail to see the damage there. The lake at the sprinkler park was so flooded that the waters actually covered the splash pad and part of the parking lot! We also saw that the dam was almost covered with water, lots and lots of trees were down, part of the road was washed away, the trail was messed up, and there was debris everywhere.

And here I thought that central Texas didn't get effected by hurricanes. Pretty crazy stuff!
